Services And Responsibilities
Administration
This division is responsible for the planning, cost estimates, and prioritizing of Public Works improvements and projects. It includes two customer service support staff members who are responsible for handling in-house operations (such as preparing payroll and bill payments for submission to the Finance Department, typing, filing, etc.) and handling calls and requests from residents, vendors, and other departments.
Street Division
This division is responsible for asphalt and concrete work, including asphalt overlaying, sealing cracks in City roadways, and repairing pot holes. This crew also mends and replaces sidewalks, does street/slab replacements, and handles curb replacements for both motor and pedestrian traffic.
Building Division
This division is responsible for maintaining City properties, including City Hall, Public Works, the Public Safety Building, and the Building Department.
Snow and Ice Removal
All Public Works divisions are responsible for snow and ice removal from City streets during the winter months. The department also maintains all city street signage and coordinates the operation and maintenance of street lights with Ameren UE.
Mosquito Control
In conjunction with the St Louis County Health Department's Vector Control division, our Public Works crew sprays for mosquitoes and flying insects on a city-wide basis during the summer months. We do our best to spray after dark to lessen contact with bees and people. The Center for Disease Control (CDC) also provides this valuable information concerning mosquitoes.
Solid Waste and Recycling
The Public Works Department also works closely with Republic Services - the City's contracted waste hauler - to ensure that customer service problems are properly handled. Residents who have questions or problems with curbside recycling, solid waste disposal or large-item pick-ups may call Republic Services at 636-947-5959 or visit them at RepublicServices.com.
Curbside Leaf Vacuuming
We provide fall leaf vacuuming as a free service to our residents. The service is available from November through January.
Excavation/Special Use Permits
The issuance of Special Use Permits is required for repairs to residential or commercial driveways, City sidewalks, tree lawn cuts, and street excavation typically necessary when residents need to make certain kinds of plumbing or other repairs. This process is handled by Public Works. Call 314-645-2277 for details.
