THE HEIGHTS Renovation - What to Expect

THE HEIGHTS facility is excitedly undergoing renovation in multiple areas of the building. The renovation includes a complete remodel of the aquatic center with upgrades happening in all of the locker rooms, an expansion of the fitness center, 3 dedicated group x fitness rooms, and enclosed balconies in the lobby on both the fitness and library sides.

Continue reading below to view the renderings of what to expect along with more details of the construction plans in each area. To see the renovations come to life you can view our bi-weekly videos of the construction in action at the bottom of the page!

   The Aquatic Center

The aquatic center is the biggest project of the renovation. The area was completely demolished and is being built from the ground up. The features in this newly constructed area will include; four lap lanes; an enlarged hot tub; a larger 3.5' deep body of water for programming and play; a spray ground for the little ones; and an upgraded steam room and sauna. Along with that we will be upgrading the locker rooms, but we will always have facilities available for use during the renovation period.

   The Fitness Area

The fitness area expansion will be located on two levels on the western-most court in our gymnasium. On the main level there will be three dedicated group x fitness rooms, with additional fitness space inside of the track area on the second floor. The fitness center remains open during the construction but the gymnasium and track is closed until project completion. Renovation Rundown: Episode 12

"LOOKING FA-BOO-LOUS!"
October. 17th 2019

With Halloween just two weeks away, here at THE HEIGHTS there are many “spooktacular” things happening. Construction progress continues to “hay maze” everyone.  Our construction crews are very “skillful” in their trades.

The gym space is looking “fang-tastic.”   Ductwork will go through the end of this month and fireproofing is nearing the end to make way for formation of the classroom walls. Ceiling lights are gone as are sound speakers. Before you know it there will be “boo-tiful” new fitness rooms for all to “exorcise” in.

The family locker room is “un-boo-lievable” and getting oh so close to re-opening. We are just waiting for final finishes to be completed, including doors, lockers and clean-up. No “bones” about it, you will be“hay-mazed.” Once completed the female patrons will be given the royal “treat-ment” getting first use of the space while work starts in the men’s and women’s spaces.   We would not “trick “ you.

Roofers are still up on the roof, attacking leaks after heavy rains last week. After all, we don’t want any “bats in our belfry.” They have been sharing the space with our holiday light installers as we prepare for our annual Holiday Lighting event on November 15th.

The Library balcony’s new meeting space is looking “fa-boo-lous”, as demolition was completed and storefront glass walls started going up. Casework is arriving very soon. The wall has been removed between the lobby and the main library, “witch” will provide a wide open area. You can definitely tell the layout at this point
The upstairs fitness offices and restroom construction should commence in early November. We will keep you apprised as we get closer to “boo-ginning.”

The new parking lot is “a-boot” to get underway, finishing by late November. “Witch” for updates on the progress of this site, open for both HEIGHTS and A.B. Green users.

And finally, the pool.  We have “pumpkin” to talk about. The “ghoul” will be filled with “witches brew”, better known as H2O to pressure test for leaks. But don’t get too “frightfully” excited as the liquid will be removed once this test is completed. Rock backfilling continues around the pool perimeter to prepare for deck concrete in the not too distant future. Tilework is slated very soon as well. Once we are ready to paint walls, ceiling and ductwork, our crews will be working after hours, “burning the midnight oil.”

Construction hours are typically Monday-Friday, from 7a.m.-3:30p.m.
No “bones” about it, we truly appreciate everyone’s patience. We want to give you “pumpkin” to talk about as we make THE HEIGHTS an even “batter” facility than it already was. If you have questions, don’t hesitate to contact us. Happy Halloween.

Renovation Rundown: Episode 11
"HELLO OCTOBER!"
October. 3rd 2019

Wow, it’s the first week of October. Lot of progress is being made as all of the trades are on-site working diligently toward completing the construction project at THE HEIGHTS.

The gym space has seen lots of transformation the last few weeks. Outlets are being located and, bench seating for the gym is going through design for the east side, HVAC ductwork has been installed, fireproofing is being sprayed throughout the new spaces, and the lights directly over the fitness area are about to be removed. Next week MEP work will begin.  We are very excited with the progress.

The family locker room is looking good. The final fixtures are being installed, the floor looks great, and by next week the shower and restroom doors should be installed, followed by a punch list review. Once complete the female patrons will get the first use of the space while work starts in the men’s and women’s spaces.

Roofers are about to finish within the next week, barring inclement weather.

The Library balcony’s new meeting space began this week with lots of demolition. Hours were adjusted, but all is well.  Once complete, the transformation of the balcony space will begin to make way for the new library meeting room area.

The upstairs fitness offices and restroom construction should commence in early November. We will keep you apprised as we get closer to starting.

The parking lot is waiting for the earth movers to make their way here to begin work on the new lighted 60 space parking area.  It should be fun to watch.

And finally, the pool.  After the wall pour from last week the forms have been removed. The blue ductwork is finishing and drain pipes are being installed. In the pump room, the two story block space, even though you can’t see it, just visualize new piping and pumps about to go in. Exciting, right? Next week the areas around the pool walls will be backfilled with rock, giving you an even better picture of the layout. And, tilework is slated for next week as well.

In our next edition you will hear about more demolition starting in new areas. We are moving along.
Construction hours are typically Monday-Friday, from 7a.m.-3:30p.m.

As you can tell, THE HEIGHTS is abuzz with lots of activity all around. As always, we truly appreciate everyone’s patience as we make THE HEIGHTS an even better facility than it already was. If you have questions, don’t hesitate to contact us.

Renovation Rundown: Episode 10
"Making Great Strides!"
September. 20th 2019

Three weeks into September and construction progress at THE HEIGHTS is making great strides.
The gym has transformed into two separate spaces now – fitness classrooms and a multipurpose court. The block walls have been finished, steelwork for the second story flooring is complete, and on Wednesday the big equipment arrived to pour the floor. Next week MEP work will begin. It is amazing how it is taking shape.

The family locker room is beautiful. Walls have been painted with bright and cheery colors, the epoxy flooring has been poured and is curing, and fixtures installed. Once workers can get back in after the floor is done, shower and restroom doors will be installed and finish work completed. This area should be finished the first week of October so that we can move our female patrons into this area for work to take place in the men’s and women’s spaces.

Roofers are on-site, with ongoing work on the flat roof replacement. This should take approximately four more weeks. This work is of course weather dependent.

The Library balcony’s new meeting space is slated to begin the week of September 30 th . There will be some adjusted hours for the library to reduce the noise level, so please confirm those dates and times with library staff.

Following on the heels of library construction, the fitness center restroom & office work will begin soon after. As we have a more firm date, we will be sure to let you know.

Outside, the new parking area is about to become a reality with sixty extra parking spaces. This is
located east of the library side on Laclede Station Road. The three city-owned properties are gone and the site is cleared. Bidding for the project is complete and received Council approval. Work should be starting right around the corner.

And finally, the pool, the most visually open to public, gives a bird’s eye view from our lobby area. Last week the second area of concrete was poured, in the lap lane floor area. Starting on the 24th of September a plastic sheet will encompass the entire pool area to get ready for the shooting of concrete for the walls. This should be completed by the end of that week with forms removed starting on the 30th.

Renovation Rundown: Episode 9
"Taking Shape!"
August. 22, 2019

One more week of August and construction progress at THE HEIGHTS is moving along nicely.

The gym is in the midst of major transformation with CMU block now completed forming the walls of the group fitness spaces. Massive pieces of steel have been brought in to construct pillars and ceilings of the rooms. You can actually picture what it’s going to look like.

Behind closed doors in the family locker room, work is about three weeks until completion. They are nearing the point where they are ready for paint. Once this new area is complete we will switch to the men’s and women’s locker rooms for their facelift. These will not occur simultaneously so that we have an alternative space for our guests to use – the new family locker room. The family locker area should be completed in mid-September.

The roofers have been on-site, now working on the flat roof replacement work should take approximately one month. This work is of course weather dependent.

The Library balcony and fitness center restroom & office work will begin in late September. As we have a more firm date, we will be sure to let you know.

Outside, the new parking area is about to become a reality with sixty extra parking spaces. This is located east of the library side on Laclede Station Road. The three city-owned properties were demolished and the site cleared. The project is currently out to bid, going to Council for approval in mid-September. Once approved the work would commence shortly thereafter.

And finally, the pool, the most open to public, gives a bird’s eye view from our lobby area. This week provided a lot of excitement as the first area of concrete was poured, in the northern portion. The lap lanes should be poured in approximately ten days. We had a bit of a snag with an unforeseen column in the pool area that had to be demolished, but we are confident to be back on schedule.

Construction hours are typically Monday-Friday, from 7a.m.-3:30p.m.

As always, we truly appreciate everyone’s patience as we make THE HEIGHTS an even better facility than it already was. If you have questions, don’t hesitate to contact us.

Renovation Rundown: Episode 8
"4 Months In!"
August. 8, 2019

It’s August and we are officially 4 months into this Renovation Journey.

The aquatic center construction is 30% complete. Crews continue the plumbing and formwork for the leisure pool. The CMU block walls for the pool filter room have been constructed and you may have noticed the laying of the rebar is almost done. In August we will begin work on the pool filter room and pour the concrete floor and walls of the pool.

Our family locker room is 40% complete. These past few weeks the crews have been working on mechanical, electrical, plumbing and fire sprinklers. This month we expect them to complete the ceilings, tile and casework.

The gymnasium has been making great progress and is already 40% complete. These last few weeks new footings and foundation were poured for the fitness classrooms and the squeeze lintels in the gym openings are being installed. The main function of the lintel is to take loads coming from above the wall and transfer its load to the side walls. This month you can expect to see the steel erection begin.

Construction hours are typically Monday-Friday, from 7a.m.-3:30p.m.

Renovation Rundown: Episode 7
"Making BIG Progress!"
July. 25, 2019

July is nearing the end and crews have been working diligently on construction at THE HEIGHTS.

Overnight demolition in the gym area is now complete and it is beginning to be rebuilt. Hallway windows were removed, which will make way for the new fitness class entrances. Half the track came down to allow the new classrooms to be constructed. We promise, it will return once the new spaces are complete.

The perimeter footings for the gym classrooms have been poured, which gives you a great visual to begin to see the layout of this space. The concrete masonry units, better known as CMU blocks are filling walls and other areas of the gym, which will then give way to the massive steel columns coming in early August. While the gym work is underway, we do ask that members use the front stairs or elevator to access the fitness center as we have closed the rear stairwell so that workers have direct access to the gym and hallway areas.

The smaller version of the functional training area has been met with positivity. On the meeting room side, fitness classes continue to meet there. You probably have noticed lots of fitness equipment moved and stored everywhere.

We want to make everything as accessible as possible for our fitness users and appreciate your help.

Behind closed doors in the family locker room, the CMU work has been completed. You can easily tell that there are new showers and restroom areas inside. They are about to begin the early finishes work, which consists of ceilings, tile and casework , followed by late finishes, painting and flooring in late August – mid September.

The roofers have been on-site, completing the shingle replacement in the front of the building. Flat roof replacement work should begin sometime in August.

Library balcony work will begin in the coming month when the demolition begins. As we have a more firm date when this will begin, we will be sure to let you know.

And finally, the pool, the most open to public, provides a bird’s eye view from our lobby area. Lots of piping has been laid, being covered with the rock base for the pool floor. The two story pump room block walls have gone up and the surge tanks have been completed (those massive concrete boxes near each end of the lap lanes.) The plywood layout of the pool is complete, allowing you to envision what it will actually look like.  By mid-August the northernmost pool floor will be poured, followed by wall re-bar and shooting of the concrete walls.

Construction hours are typically Monday-Friday, from 7a.m.-3:30p.m.

"Full Speed Ahead!"
June. 27, 2019

June is almost over and there is much evidence that lots has been going on at THE HEIGHTS.   The pool is definitely taking shape and you can begin to see where everything will be.  The soil issues in the pool have been remediated, so progress is full speed ahead.  Next week we hope to start pouring concrete.

The gym area demolition is moving along as crews continue overnight work to minimize inconvenience to our members.  The track surface and some concrete have been removed and rail as well.  Very soon the track will be gone.

Basketball goals, the gym curtain, and perimeter equipment are gone.  The gym floor is about to be removed on the west side to prepare for the new classrooms to be constructed.

The smaller version of the functional training area has been met with positivity.  On the meeting room side, fitness classes continue to meet there.  You probably have noticed lots of fitness equipment moved and stored everywhere.  We want to make everything as accessible as possible for our fitness users and appreciate your help.

There will still continue to be temporary locker room closures from time to time, but we will make you aware as soon as we know when these will occur.  Typically it is for just a short period.

The roofers will appear on-site soon.  There will be roof shingle replacement in the front of the building, with the area below fenced off for safety purposes.  Most of the work will be accessed from the rear of the building for the flat roof.  You may hear activity on the roof, but it should not be disruptive.

Construction hours are typically Monday-Friday, from 7a.m.-3:30p.m. , with gym demo occurring overnight.

"A Jolted June"
June. 14, 2019

June has been moving fast and furious so far at THE HEIGHTS.   We experienced some soil issues in the pool, but it has not slowed down the progress.  Pipe is still being laid and surge tank walls formed and poured.  Lots of work still continues in the family locker room.

The gym area and locker room hallway saw lots of activity this week.  Carpeting and ceiling tiles were pulled in the hallway.  Gym windows were removed into the hallway and the sprinkler system was moved in the gym area for the removal of the track, beginning next week.

You probably have noticed lots of fitness equipment moved and stored everywhere.  We want to make everything as accessible as possible for our fitness users.  The Youth Work Zone was also transformed into a smaller version of the functional fitness area formerly in the gym.  The Work Zone is now officially closed through construction.

In the fitness area upstairs, the existing fitness manager’s office was removed to provide access to the back stairwell as the track will not be accessible.  Beginning June 17th through project completion the full gym and track areas will be closed.  During gym demolition there will be some night activity occurring after building hours to minimize disruption to our patrons.  This should last approximately five weeks.

There will still continue to be temporary locker room closures from time to time, but we will make you aware as soon as we know when these will occur.  Typically it is for just a short period.

The roofers will appear on-site next week.  There will be roof shingle replacement in the front areas, however these will be fenced off for safety purposes.  Most of the work will be accessed from the rear of the building for the flat roof.  You may hear activity on the roof, but it should not be disruptive.

"Demo is Going Strong"
May. 2, 2019

Construction, or should we say “destruction” is going strong. If you've been by THE HEIGHTS lately you can see huge pieces of equipment breaking up concrete from the pool area. It’s quite a show!

Demolition has about two weeks left before we move into the next phase. Most of the focus will continue to be in the pool area, with some work beginning in the family locker room. While this phase is occurring, the family locker room will continue to be closed to the public as it is to be reconfigured with a new pool entrance, additional restrooms and enclosed shower spaces.

Beginning sometime in June, work will then commence in the gymnasium area. Once this work begins, the gymnasium and track spaces will be closed until completion. Once we know the exact start date we will make sure you are apprised.

Construction hours are typically Monday-Friday, from 7a.m.-3:30p.m.

"Let the Renovations Begin"
April. 18th, 2019

Construction is officially in full swing. After closing the pool on Sunday, April 7th, staff spent the week clearing out equipment, draining the pool, and preparing for the project to get underway. Along with that, the west lot and playground were enclosed for construction staging.

On Monday, April 15th, construction crews began removing pool play features, the slide, rails, and any other items affixed to the pool in preparation for demolition. Demolition will begin late this week or early next week. It will be loud, but our construction management team is seeking ways to speed up this process.

Construction hours are typically Monday-Friday, from 7am-3:30pm. You may want to adjust your workout schedule if you do find the demolition to be too loud.
