Nominate RH for Google's Ultra High-Speed Internet Trial
Nominate RH for Ultra High-Speed Internet Trial

Google™ is planning to build and test ultra high-speed broadband networks in a small number of communities across the United States. The company said it plans to sell the service at a “competitive price” to at least 50,000 people to start and eventually up to 500,000 people. There is a competitive online application process that asks a range of questions, from the number of utility poles in the city to the description of terrain, to what types of jobs, colleges, and health-care facilities are in the area.
Richmond Heights hopes to partner with the City of Clayton and other municipalities in the immediate area.
“This ultra-high speed broadband network is the kind of thing that could give a boost to existing businesses in the city — and could attract new businesses and markets to move here to take advantage of the super-fast network infrastructure,” said Jake Parillo, a Google spokesperson. “This could be the type of push that gives local businesses a push in creating markets that can flourish nationally or globally.”
The proposed broadband network’s 1 gigabit-per-second speed would be 100 times faster than the Internet access most Americans have today, said James Kelly, product manager on Google’s infrastructure team in a video posted on Google’s blog. Speeds like that would allow users to download high-definition, full-length movies in less than five minutes, for example. http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2010/02/think-big-with-gig-our-experimental.html\, http://www.google.com/appserve/fiberrfi.
Google is not yet disclosing how many applications it's received so far but the communities range from rural villages to huge metropolitan areas, Parrillo said. The requests for proposals from interested cities are due March 26, and Google plans to announce the winning communities later this year.
Individuals are also encouraged to nominate their own communities. Please visit http://www.google.com/appserve/fiberrfi/public/options and click “Nominate Your Community.”

FREE CFL RECYCLING FOR AMERENUE CUSTOMERS
ST. LOUIS, MO., Feb. 16, 2010- AmerenUE’s Residential Energy Efficiency Department is launching a compact fluorescent light (CFL) bulb recycling program to make disposing of CFL bulbs easier for UE customers. The program offers residential customers a convenient no-cost way to safely dispose of used CFL bulbs.
“We’re offering our customers a variety of energy efficiency programs, like discounted CFLs, to help them save energy and money. When those CFL bulbs finally do burn out, we’re now providing an easy and environmentally friendly way to dispose of those products,” says Richard Mark, senior vice president of Customer Operations.
Customers simply bring their used CFL bulbs to an AmerenUE authorized recycling location for disposal. Recycling centers will accept broken CFL bulbs if they are in Ziploc-style plastic bags.
More than 50 authorized CFL bulb recycling locations are available. UE has initially established recycling centers in Ace Hardware stores and in the City of St. Peters to provide this service throughout the UE territory. Additional sites, including retailers, municipalities and communities, will be added soon. UE has also partnered with Home Depot to be part of their existing recycling program.
AmerenUE, founded in 1902, provides electric and gas service to approximately 1.2 million customers across central and eastern Missouri, including the greater St. Louis area. UE serves 57 Missouri counties and 500 towns. The company's electric rates are among the lowest in the nation. For more information, visit www.amerenue.com. Special Loan Program for Small Businesses
St. Louis County Economic Council has unveiled an innovative small business loan program that is deemed the first of its kind in the United States and will help boost lending for entrepreneurs.

BOOST is an alternative to the Small Business Administration's (SBA) 504 loan program, offering less restrictive requirements to borrowers seeking financing for the purchase or construction of land, buildings, machinery, and equipment within St. Louis County. Like the SBA 504 loan program, a borrower typically injects only 10 percent of the total loan amount; its bank lends 50 percent of the total project cost and St. Louis County Economic Council lends 40 percent.

Visit www.slcec.com or contact Derek Dickrader at 314.615.7681 to see how your company can benefit.

MSD’s Annual Spring Rain Barrel Sale Starts March 1
For the second year in a row, the Metropolitan St. Louis Sewer District (MSD) will offer rain barrels to customers from March 1 to 31, 2010. The barrels cost $65 each, and quantities are limited. Click on the "Additional info" link below or call (314) 768-6238 for complete details.

Rain barrels are used to collect and store rainwater from the roof of a home or other building. The rainwater would normally flow through the downspout and eventually end up in the storm drain. But by using a rain barrel, the rainwater can be used to water a lawn or a garden. Rain barrels also can reduce water pollution by reducing storm water runoff, which contains pollutants such as sediment, oil, grease, bacteria and other components.

MSD is offering the rain barrel program as part of its ongoing effort to promote the use of green activities that benefit water quality in the St. Louis community. [Additional info...]

Information To Help Those With Mortgage Problems
Information To Help Those With Mortgage Problems

If you or someone you know are among the thousands of homeowners across the nation who are behind in their home mortgage payments, help can be just a mouse click or a phone call away.
St. Louis County has created a new website containing documents distributed to more than 50 local government officials who recently attended a meeting to discuss issues related to foreclosure. The information distributed to City officials, including some from Richmond Heights, is posted to the County’s new website and includes a PowerPoint(TM) presentation, brochures, and telephone numbers to agencies that can provide additional assistance.

Visit www.stlouisco.com/plan/foreclosure to review these materials.
Another source of help is the Homeownership Preservation Foundation. This agency operates a Hotline at 888-995-HOPE (4673) where callers can talk to an advisor from a HUD-approved agency. There is no cost for these services, and the advisor can work with the homeowner to get them back on track and to help them stay out of foreclosure.
